Words of Encouragement and Jack

Posted by on June 8, 2011

Our sometimes sweet son Jack lit up when I told him:

“Jack, Dad said you drive the moped better than me!”  Now, if you can look past the fact that my 9 year old son is yes, sometimes driving a moped…you will see how much words of encouragement mean to our son.  The rest of the day that boy beamed…it seemed like at times, he was walking on air.  I know the feeeling…I’m stricken with the same love language…Sunday I got an e-mail from my professor giving me the good news that my research proposal is almost out of the “editing-revise-edit again” vicious black hole…I could barely concentrate on church I was so excited.  Words can mean so much.  How this plays out, especially with Jack, will be interesting.

Buddy, on the other hand, seemed to be busy during the handing out of this love language…time and time again in our marriage, I have asked him, “Don’t you remember the kind words so-and-so said about this/that/you?”.  Every time…No.  Gary Smalley doomed much of the male population with the recognition of this “love language”…seems it is is less prominent for men…But, Jack…words mean so much to him…good, bad, ugly, they soothe or cut deeper than other things.

It’s not a bad thing, it just makes us more aware and gives us more to coach and pray about.  He’s just a walking example of the many proverbs that reflect the power of words.  Please pray that we would have wisdom to love and teach our boy.
