Not what I imagined would be my first interaction in Thai…

Posted by on June 11, 2011

Hey there friends…

Since some of you like to think of us living in mud huts…here’s a story that will blow your mind…

Last Saturday we had a some crazy torrential rains…even Okinawa rainy season didn’t touch this…it is even hard to imagine even when I saw it…

One of four leaks in our house that night!

Seriously? Electricity and Water are not supposed to mix!

Anyhow, since our hot season was really a rainy season this year, the ground is soaked and when this downpour came, it was no time until it up to waist-deep in some places.  Buddy braved the elements (not knowing how bad it was) and took one of Jack’s friends home only to see a guys low-riding, over $100,000 Mercedes stuck.  Buddy towed this Thai family back to their home, not thinking much about it.

Two days later, we see this Thai man and his wife drive around checking out our place and our truck.  He had been looking for TWO days to find his Good Samaritan.  After meeting them, we all began to pantomine/chat and found out that their Mercedes had to be sent to Bangkok for a complete overhaul…water had ruined every computer-run part.  So, excited to bust out some of my Thai, I said…”Peeng, maak?” (Is it expensive!?)  I loved being able to say to them in their own language something…it was so fun!  She smiled so big and said, “Maak, maak!”  Super expensive!

I never would’ve dreamed that I would have my first interaction with a Thai person over a $100,000 Mercedes.  That’s nuts!  But, it was sweet and wonderful and they gave us a gift (an emergency towing kit!) and it was the first opportunity to love these people in their own language!  How fun! 🙂
