Do you know why I am sad?

Posted by on March 5, 2006

I was standing at the back of church with Jack yesterday letting Jack circle my legs while I held his head and ruffled his hair. The sound man, a gentle grandfatherly type, came over, bent down to Jack’s height and asked Jack how old he was.

Jack, smiled sheepishly, looked at him and held out four fingers.

At the time I thought his pinky finger had just slipped off of his thumb so I helped him form three fingers and told him that Jack was growing up quickly and would be four in a few months.

Fast forward 8 hours.

Last night Jack, my daughter Adrianne and I were driving in the van and Jack asked me a question.

“Do you know why I am sad, Dad?”

I didn’t even know that he was sad and I certainly didn’t know why he was sad since it seemed to me like everything in his world was going great.

“I don’t son. Why are you sad?” I asked.

“Because I want to be four and I am only fhree (read three)”

I wonder how often in life I am sad but don’t realize the reason is because I am focusing what I don’t have, don’t do, or am not instead of what I do have, do get to do and who I am.
