Driving in Okinawa

Well, Jen and I finally got our driver's license for Japan.  We had to sit in a one hour course where they told us about animal life in the ocean and to watch out for heat in the summer.  They told us we would be driving on the left side of the road and offered about 3 minutes of driving tips.  I am not even kidding about this, we were told if we wanted to know what the road signs looked like and what they meant to look at their web page.  Our first major venture off base (we are only staying about a half mile off base) was yesterday when we took a guy from the chapel to the airport about an hour away.

We got a little lost going to the guys house to pick him up.  I tried to turn off the main road to turn around and about that point I had a brain fart.  For some reason I went back to the right side of the road.  Unfortunately there was a car coming right at us.  Luckily there was a small parking lot right there so I turned in just before things got a little crazy.  Except for trying to turn in front of a dump truck the rest of my driving has been pretty uneventful.  I do often switch on the windshield wipers instead of the turn signal but even that is growing less frequent.

Which way do we go?  Reading the signs has proved a little difficult since everything is written in Congi.  It turns out that everything off base has an American name because no one knows what the Japanese names for things are.  We are looking forward to getting to learn a little more about the culture.

Naha is a the largest city on the island.  Much of the island is urban.  We hear that there are parts up north that are more rural but we haven't seen them yet.  Well we just wanted to give a you a quick idea of what things are like for us over here.  We will be taking pictures of the base next week to let you know what it is like there.
